Enter the Wonderful World of the Medical
Office Assistant
by Janine Friend
When you enter a doctor's office you are most often greeted with a smiling face. This person takes your name, your insurance card and might even ask you to update some of your information. The person then tells you to take a seat and utters the famous line, "The doctor will be with you shortly."
The smiling face that handles all the "behind the scenes" work is a medical office assistant. Although their job may look easy, answering phones and making charts, the medical office assistant career is no "easy as pie" profession. This medical office assistant is a highly trained professional who probably attended one of the many medical office assistant schools and became educated in the field of health care.

Although the health care field is growing fast, the field is quite challenging. The medical office assistant is responsible for making sure that patients are properly taken care of and that the office is running smoothly, which is no small task.

The abundance of medical office assistant schools across the nation, and even on the Internet, offer the increased demand for medical office assistant training. Some of the tasks a student will learn in medical office assistant schools include recording medical histories and vital signs; how to prepare patients for examinations; and how to explain treatment procedures to the patients. Students will also be trained in clerical duties such as answering the phone properly, and handling a large phone board, greeting and handling patients in an appropriate manner and scheduling appointments.

These

also offer plenty of classes to help their students understand the medical lingo and legal aspects of the field. Some of these classes include law, ethics and medicine; administrative procedures and practices; advanced medical terminology and basic classes in computer training such as word processing and key boarding.

From the outside looking in, the job of a medical office assistant may appear to be nothing more than answering phones it's really a lot more than that. Take some classes and find out if a medical office assistant career is for you.
